Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and identification (ID) of infectious agents provide critical information for the management of patients with infections as stated by WHO:“Effective, rapid, low-cost diagnostic tools are needed for guiding optimal use of antibiotics in human and animal medicine, and such tools should be easily integrated into clinical, pharmacy and veterinary practices. Evidence-based prescribing and dispensing should be the standard of care.” To achieve this and depart from using empirical therapy in treatment decisions is, however, not straightforward and will require much further research and development.
This Symposium is aimed at discussing progress, problems and medical needs in this rapidly developing field, and the importance of academic and biotech-industry based research to provide promising new innovations for rapid, cheap, robust and user—friendly methods that can shorten the turnaround time for AST and ID in many different types of clinical settings. Our hope is that the mix of people from biotech industry, academia and health care will have two interesting days of discussion in this area, and in particular identify strengths and weaknesses with current and novel methods in relation to clinical demands and limitations.
