Welcome to the UAC seminar series. Over the next occasions we will be presenting the science being done at UAC, featuring the projects and principal investigators that are part of our center.
Dr. Oscar Verho, PI at UAC, Department of Medicinal Chemistry
“A DNA-encoded compound library-based approach for the discovery of novel antibiotics”
Antibiotics constitute an essential pillar of modern medicine, and they are arguably the most successful class of drugs ever used. However, their effectiveness against infectious diseases is currently being challenged by the emergence of pan-drug resistant bacterial pathogens. This is particularly concerning given the fact that very few new novel-mechanism antibiotics have been discovered in the past four decades, and thus there currently exists a large unmet clinical need for new drugs that can combat these emerging threats.
In our proposed project, we will seek to identify structurally novel inhibitors of LepB and LpxH, which are two promising but currently underexplored antibiotic targets. To enable efficient hit discovery, we plan to make use of the DNA-encoded compound library (DECL) technology, which currently constitutes the most efficient and cost-effective method for synthesizing and screening compound libraries.
